About Gram Negative Rods?

Can some one here help me out ! My husband had ecoli gram negative rods couple of months ago, the dr's put him on IV antibiotic and he was fine until last week, the symptoms (fever with chills) came back, and he was diagonsed again with the same stuff, is this curable, or is there anyone out there, gone through this, what happened, anything info would help :(
